An opportunity in Peru

Dear Family and Friends,

A few weeks ago, while chatting with missionary friends from our home church, they mentioned their upcoming medical mission trip to Peru this Fall. Knowing I was a doctor, Joan jokingly asked, “You don’t pull teeth do you?”. “Well, as a matter of fact, I do.” I answered. Felt like one of those Holiday Inn Express commercials!

Well, before we knew it, Melissa and I were praying for the Lord’s guidance as to whether I should join this two week, short term medical mission team to Peru. They had a need for a dentist, and though I am certainly no dentist, and certainly don’t speak Spanish, I’ve extracted lots of teeth in Africa, and we’ve felt led by the Lord to take part in such a neat ministry, a ministry that we even remember supporting many years ago through Hershey Free Church before we went to Africa as missionaries. So, I said “Count me in! I’ll pull teeth in the jungles of Peru for Jesus!”

ReachGlobal, the mission arm of the Evangelical Free Church of America, has had a partnership with the Evangelical Missionary Church of Pucallpa, Peru, for many years, planting churches among unreached villages in the jungle of the upper Amazon River. This medical team will continue in this on-going work by providing medical, dental, chiropractic, and vision care in seven or eight villages. We’ll be working alongside friends from the Pucallpa church in evangelism through conversations, testimonies, music and films for children and adults. It’s our prayer that this trip will aid the process of discipleship and church planting in these communities.

Our team will be based aboard a riverboat called the Evangelista, traveling upriver to visit villages from October 25th to November 8th, 2014. Team meetings are happening right now, and I’m asking that you pray for us as we prepare for this mission work in the jungle.

Many of you already regularly support us as missionaries in Tanzania, and many of you have given so generously in separate gifts over the years. If you feel lead to give to support this Peru team, that would be wonderful. I’ve committed $450 from my personal funds for the trip. I need to raise an additional $2,500 for this mission trip.

Support checks can be made payable to “Evangelical Free Church of Hershey”, and sent to us with a note with your current address. Please mail them to:

(Do not put our names on the check please)

Please pray for the following for the 2014 Peru medical team:

1) Team unity and preparation
2) Submissiveness to the Lord’s leading
3) Health and safety
4) strengthening of the partnership with the Pucallpa Church
5) responsiveness of the villagers to the gospel

For Christ,

Jon
